Edeka Rhein-Ruhr, in collaboration with L. Stroetmann, implements Wasteless AI to transform its markdown process for fresh meat and sausages, achieving a remarkable 47% reduction in food waste while increasing customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
Faced with the challenge of optimizing markdown pricing and minimizing food waste across its fresh meat and sausage (SB Fleisch) departments, Edeka, in collaboration with L. Stroetmann, sought a solution that could go beyond basic rule-based systems. After a thorough evaluation, they partnered with Wasteless to implement our AI-powered dynamic pricing technology.
The results have been transformative. Wasteless delivered an average markdown of 19% on near-expired items, ensuring that products are sold at attractive prices while remaining profitable. More impressively, participating Edeka stores have seen a remarkable 47%-74% reduction in food waste within the covered assortment, dramatically improving their sustainability performance.
A key factor in the project's success was the seamless integration of Wasteless into Edeka's existing operations. By leveraging Wasteless’s plug-and-play capabilities, the AI was fully compatible with their point-of-sale (POS) systems from day one. The system was installed on existing handheld devices, used with a mobile printer, requiring minimal disruption to existing workflows.
Wasteless leverages daily sales and waste data to power the AI pricing engine, which typically requires 7-10 minutes for staff to manage through the intuitive Wasteless Store App.
The impact extends beyond just financial gains. Edeka store associates have found the Wasteless solution incredibly easy to use, even those less familiar with technology. In addition, customers have responded enthusiastically to the new markdowns. “We see customers are getting very keen to purchase discounts. Sometimes, as soon as I apply stickers, customers are taking the product out of my hands,” added a Store Manager.
“At Wasteless, we are committed to empowering grocery retailers to maximize profitability while minimizing their environmental impact,” said Ralph de Vries, COO of Wasteless. “Our partnership with Edeka demonstrates the transformative power of AI to create a more efficient and sustainable food system. We are proud to work with a company that shares our vision for a waste-free future.”
This collaboration highlights the potential of innovative technologies to address critical global challenges, such as food waste, while driving significant business value for retailers.
Wasteless is currently active in North America, Europe and South America, helping leading grocery chains optimize their fresh food operations and enhance their commitment to sustainability.
